General information

The Eighth Leiden Summer School in Languages and Linguistics will be held from 15 July - 26 July 2013 at the Faculty of Humanities of Leiden University.

Programmes

The Summer School offers a number of courses on a wide range of subjects in the field of languages and linguistics. In 2013, the Summer School will consist of nine programmes, each with its own courses and a separate Tashelhiyt Berber Language Course: 


Teaching language

All courses are taught in English, which means that good knowledge of the English language is a basic requirement. The courses of the Russian Programme are taught in Russian.

ECTS

Active participation in a course stands for 2 ECTS. At the end of the Summer School, every participant will receive a certificate, which will indicate the courses followed and the amount of awarded ECTS credits. In order to get 5 ECTS credits, participants can ask their teacher for an extra take-home examination, which will then be corrected and graded. If they pass, they will receive a new certificate from the organization.

Tuition fee

  • €525,- for 3 or 4 courses / timeslots 
  • €375,-: reduced price for those who take only 2 courses / timeslots 
  • €225,-: reduced price for those who take only 1 course / timeslot 

There is a special rate for registered BA/MA/PhD students, who pay
  • €425,- for 3 or 4 courses / timeslots
  • €300,- for 2 courses / timeslots 
  • €175,- for 1 course / timeslot

Fee includes tuition, study materials, extra-curricular activities, coffee and tea during breaks, welcome reception and farewell diner.

Lunch

Lunch is not included in the tuition fee. However, a warm lunch will be provided daily at the same location as the courses. Participanting in the joint lunch in possible for an additional € 65,- (for all 10 days of the Summer School, € 6,50 per day).

Extra-curricular activities

Apart from the classes, some extra-curricular activities will be planned during the Summer School, which are included in the tuition fee.

Opening reception
In the afternoon of Sunday, July 14th, an opening reception will be held. Attending the reception is not obligatory, but offers all participants an opportunity to get to know each other and their teachers in an informal setting.

Farewell dinner
After the last classes on Friday, July 26th, a joint dinner will end the Summer School in a festive way. At this occassion, all participants will receive their certificates.

Evening programme
In the evening, a few lectures will be held on different linguistic topics. The programme will appear online in due course.

The conference "The lengthened grade in Indo-European"

Directly after the Summer School, on 29, 30 and 31 July 2013, the Leiden University Centre for Linguistics will host the 2013 thematic Conference (Arbeitstagung) of the Society for Indo-European Studies, dedicated to "The lengthened grade in Indo-European". We have arranged that those who wish to attend the conference can stay in their rooms without additional costs. Please indicate your intention on the registration form. You can also pay the conference fee of €70 (which includes lunches and the conference dinner) together with the Summer School fees.
