Slots 1-2. Masterclass Active Russian (9.30-11.00 and 11.30 - 13.00) - week 1

Course language combination: Dutch-Russian and/or English-Russian (depending on participants).

The master class offers an intensive course in active Russian (listening, speaking, reading and writing). Its objective is to boost language skills – with major emphasis on speaking - to a significantly higher level within a short period.

Methods include story telling, role playing, presenting and discussing information. Communicative situations will be analysed and exercised with respect to their cultural, idiomatic, syntactic and grammatical aspects. Participants are encouraged to propose topics and communicative situations relevant to their professional experience.

Successful completion of the course requires Dutch or English speaking participants to be proficient in Russian at C1-C2 level of competence (Common European Framework of Reference) already possessing all language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing). A diagnostic proficiency test will be taken at the end of the course.

A certificate of participation will be available in case of full attendance and successful completion. The master class is accredited as permanent education activity for interpreters registered with the Register beëdigde tolken en vertalers; pe-points on the basis of 2 ECTS: 30 points for taking the class both weeks.

Course language combination: Dutch-Russian and/or English-Russian (depending on participants)

The master class offers an intensive course in interpretation skills and memory techniques for native speakers of Dutch (or English) who work as interpreters for the Dutch-Russian (or English-Russian) language combination. Experienced interpreters can follow the course as a comprehensive refresher course; less experienced interpreters can use the course to enhance their language and interpretation skills within a short period. The course will concentrate on techniques of consecutive interpretation but basic techniques of conference interpretation will also be discussed and practised. Several memory techniques will be explained and practiced.

Exercises include role playing and enactment of interpretation situations. Communicative situations will be analysed and exercised with respect to aspects of culture, efficiency and professional ethics. Exercises will refer to common interpretation settings (e.g. immigration, police, court room, notary; health care; business meetings, contract discussion). Participants are encouraged to contribute topics and materials relevant to their professional experience.

Slots 3-4. Masterclass Russian Literature (14.00-15.30 and 16.00 - 17.30)

Lena Lubotsky (Leiden)  

This year’s Master Class will be dedicated to an analysis of Black Snow: A Theatrical Novel (Черный снег. Театральный роман) by Mikhail Bulgakov and two novellas by Ivan Turgenev, Torrents of Spring (Вешние воды) and Klara Milich (Клара Милич). The participants should read all the three works before they attend the Summer School. The texts to be discussed can be found here:

The only language used during the Master Class will be Russian, and the students will actively participate in discussing these works.
