If you wish to continue with the master’s programme that follows on directly from your bachelor’s programme, please contact your Co-ordinator of Studies to discuss your master’s programme.
In order to change your registration from ‘bachelor’s’ to ‘master’s’, go to the Studielink website and under your bachelor’s programme, choose ‘do not re-register’. Then, register for your master’s programme. For more information on master's programmes, see the Plexus website.
A research master’s or a different master’s programme
If you wish to begin a research master’s or a general master’s programme that does not follow on directly from your bachelor’s programme, you first have to apply for admission using the online application form. Once you have gained admission to the programme, the University will send you a five-digit Student ID which you can use in Studielink to indicate that this is the programme you will be following.
This admission form must be sent in before 15 June (if you wish to start in September) or 1 December (if you wish to start in February).
For more information, see the Plexus website on the enrolment procedure.
You can end your enrolment through Studielink: log in and choose ´request for termination of enrolment´ under ´my study programmes´. This is also how you are required to end your enrolment if you have completed your bachelor’s and do not wish to continue studying.
Your registration will be terminated at the first day of the month following the month in which your cancellation request was received through Studielink. You can also apply for a date later in the future if you wish to. Log in and choose ´request for termination of enrolment´ under ´my study programmes´. If you have already paid the tuition fee for the months following the month in which you request to end your enrolment, you will be reimbursed for the remaining tuition fee. This does not apply to the months of July and August. For more information, please contact Plexus.
If you request termination of enrolment through Studielink because you have completed your studies, make sure you select the option ‘on the grounds of graduation’. Your registration will then only be terminated once you have actually been awarded your qualification, even if this turns out to be later than expected - for example if you have to re-sit an exam.
If you are following more than one programme in Leiden
If you are enrolled in more than one programme, it is possible to end your enrolment for only one of the programmes. In view of the Leiden study system with its Binding Study Advice, this might be particularly important in the first year of your studies.
If you are following a programme at another institution
If you are currently following a programme at another institution of higher education and you have paid the tuition fee to Leiden University, you have to include proof of termination of enrolment from the other institution in order to be reimbursed.
Please remember to send in the request for termination of enrollment no later than in the month before your date of graduation. Should you fail to do so, your enrolment will only be officially terminated in the month following the month in which you send in your request.
Date of graduation
The graduation date is always the last working day of the month in which all components of the programme are completed . This is often an earlier date than the date on which you receive your diploma.
If the Board of Examiners establishes on 15 January that you fulfil all the requirements of the final examination, then your enrolment can be terminated on 1 February even if your graduation takes place on 15 February. However, this only applies if you submit your request in or before January. If you submit your request in February, your enrolment can only be terminated on 1 March.
Once your enrolment is terminated, you will be reimbursed one-twelfth of the tuition fee for every month that you are not enrolled. If you are enrolled in more than one programme, you can only be reimbursed if you are no longer enrolled in any programme.
If your enrolment is terminated on 1 July or 1 August, there will be no restitution of tuition fees.
Starting in the month in which your enrolment is terminated, you are no longer entitled to receive a study grant (studiefinanciering). This applies only if you are no longer enrolled in any full-time study programme. You are required to terminate your study grant yourself, by sending a change form to the Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (DUO).
Note that as soon as your enrolment ends, you are no entitled to receive a study grant or a public transport pass. Make sure you remember to hand in your public transport pass! If you are still in possession of your public transport pass during a period in which you are not enrolled in any university programme, you will be sent a bill by the Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (DUO) of approximately € 140 for each month that you were unlawfully in possession of the pass. You will also have to repay the full amount of the study grant you received during this period.
