W.Th. (Wido) van Peursen finished his PhD dissertation on the verbal system in the Hebrew text of Ben Sira in 1999. A revised and enlarged edition appeared in 2004. In 2000 he received a scholarship from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) for a post-doctoral research project entitled “Language and Interpretation in the Syriac Text of Ben Sira. A Comparative Linguistic and Literary Study”. A monograph with the same title appeared in 2007. This project is part of CALAP (Computer Assisted Linguistic Analysis of the Peshitta), a joint research project of the Peshitta Institute Leiden and the Werkgroep Informatica Vrije Universiteit. The main focus of this project is the interaction between computer linguistics, Syriac and general Semitic studies, textual criticism and Old Testament exegesis. In 2005 he received a VIDI grant from NWO for the project Turgama: Computer–Assisted Analysis of the Peshitta and the Targum: Text, Language and Interpretation. Wido van Peursen is also involved in some international projects on the Syriac language and Peshitta studies, including the International Syriac Language Project, the preparation of the Concordance to the Peshitta, the New English Annotated Translation of the Syriac Bible (The Bible of Edessa), the Revision of the List of OT Peshitta Manuscripts, the  ESF Research Network Program Comparative Oriental Manuscript Studies, and the Pericope Project.
