Registration for courses and examinations

Students in the Faculty of Humanities are obliged to register for all study activities for which they are awarded an official mark.

Study Administration System uSis

All students in the Faculty of Humanities must register for every study activity for which they are awarded an official mark via the study administration system uSis. Failing to do so will result in your grades not being processed. Furthermore, uSis allows you to consult your personal timetable, track your study progress, and request an overview of your grades.

Students must use uSis to register for lectures, seminars and exams, including papers and take home examinations. Registration is obligatory for all compulsory components as well as for study activities taken as part of the optional programme (minor or modular courses). You do not need to register for the master's thesis, as this component of the programme will be registered through the student administration.

uSis instruction

Registering for courses

Registration on uSis is compulsory for all courses in philosophy (both lecures and seminars). For registration use the uSis codes included in the timetables for courses. Please register in time, and check if you are registered correctly! Students that are not registered for a course, will not be allowed to sit the final exams for that course.

Semester 1
It is possible to register for a course on uSis from 90 days before the beginning of the course up to and including Friday of the second week of class.

Semester 2
It is possible to register for a course on uSis from 90 days before the beginning of the course up to and including Friday of the second week of class.

After that it is no longer possible to register on uSis. Students that are too late for registration for courses will need the lecturer's permission to register through the student administration. Then they must register for a course by sending an e-mail to the student administration of the Institute for Philosophy, specifying their name, student number, and the title and code of the course.

Deregistration
It is possible to deregister for a course up to 14 days after the course has started. After this date students can deregister by sending an e-mail to the student administration, specifying their name, student number, and title and code of the course.

Registration for examinations and resits

Timely registration in uSis is obligatory for all final examinations (including papers and take home examinations) and (if necessary) resits. Registration for midterm exams is not necessary. For registration use the uSis codes included in the timetables for exams. Registration for an examination can take place from 8 weeks before the date of the exam up to 10 days before the date of the examination or deadline. If the day of the examination is a Monday, then the Thursday two weeks prior to that Monday is the last day on which you can register. After that date it will no longer possible to register yourself on uSis.

Late registration for an examination

If you have missed the deadline for registration for an examination or re-sit, you can contact the student administration desk. Late registration is possible up to three days before the examination, until 12 noon sharp. After that you can no longer register for an examination.

Day of the examination Registration closes
Monday Thursday 12 noon, in the week prior to the examination
Tuesday Friday 12 noon, in the week prior to the examination
Wednesday Friday 12 noon, in the week prior to the examination
Thursday Monday 12 noon, in the week of the examination
Friday Tuesday 12 noon, in the week of the examination

Withdrawing from an examination

You can withdraw from an examination on uSis until three working days before the examination.

However, to be allowed to take a re-sit, you need to take the first opportunity to sit an examination (for further information, see below).

Entry requirements

Some examinations have entry requirements: for instance, you can only participate in an examination if you have successfully completed a preliminary course, or if you have sufficiently participated in the lecture.

These entry requirements are stated in the course descriptions provided in the prospectus. If you fail to meet the entry requirements, your examination will not be marked. Please check in advance whether you are allowed to participate!

Personal identification

It is crucial that you bring your student identification card as well as personal identification (valid passport, driving licence or identity card) to the examination. Your ID may be checked.

Admission to resits

Students are allowed to resit an examination if they have met the following requirements:

  • Students must take the first opportunity to sit an examination. If they have not, they will not be allowed to take the second opportunity to sit an examination. If you cannot take the original exam due to illness, or if you are unable to attend for family reasons, et cetera, please make sure you report this beforehand. Regarding exams of the core curriculum, this needs to be done at the Student Service Desk, for all other courses please contact your Department. This can be done via email, stating your name, student ID, major and reason for absence.
If you are absent from your exam without cancellation, you forfeit your rights to retake the exam in this academic year. If you are absent with a legitimate reason, the teacher and Board of Examiners can reconsider your rights to take a resit.
  • Students are not allowed to resit examinations that they have passed (article 4.1.6. Course and Examination Regulations). This means that students who have completed a course with a pass cannot resit course components that they have failed.
