Thomas Fossen is a postdoctoral researcher in the NWO-funded project Between Deliberation and Agonism: Rethinking Conflict and its Relation to Law in Political Philosophy. His interests lie in social and political philosophy, including their history, and with particular attention to the connections with related areas of study, such as the philosophy of language, ethics, and the social sciences.

Most of his work is concerned with clarifying, in various ways and in different contexts, the relation between political thinking and political reality. For example, his dissertation, Political Legitimacy and the Pragmatic Turn (Utrecht University, 2011), aims to articulate theoretically what it is we do in practice when we distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate authorities, and draws implications for the practice of political theorizing.

In a collaborative NWO-funded project on Voting Advice Applications and the Politics of Citizen Competence, he explored the ways in which online ‘Voting Advice Applications’ attempt to give users a better grip on electoral politics. Presently, we work in democratic theory, in particular on the tensions between liberal, deliberative and agonistic political theory.
