North American Studies best program in the country

Leiden has the best master’s program in North American Studies program in the country, according to a national survey among students that has just been published by Elsevier Magazine! Leiden students are more satisfied with their program than other students are about their North American Studies program.

3 October holiday: university closed

October 3rd is a local holiday in Leiden: the ‘Leids Ontzet’. For this reason, the university buildings are closed and there will be no lectures. This is also in effect for International Studies in The Hague.


Dr. P.A. Tiele Foundation thesis prize 2016

The Dr. P.A. Tiele Foundation awards the thesis prize to the best graduate thesis in the field of book history. It is the objective of the Dr. P.A. Tiele Foundation to promote the study of the book in the Netherlands. This is done by installing professorships, enabling and publishing research and organizing symposia, congresses and lectures, and since 2007, by awarding remarkable theses.

Rubicon grant for Sara Polak

The NWO has awarded Sara Polak a Rubicon grant. In September, she will start a 12-month period of research at the International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture at Justus-Liebig University in Giessen, Germany.


Interview with American humor expert Judith Yaross Lee

On April 29th, Dr. Judith Yaross Lee received a Distinguished Professor Award from Ohio University, recognizing the exceptional contribution she's made to her scholarly field and the University. She wasn't able to attend the ceremony, though - she's in Leiden!

Leidschrift Symposium: the United States Presidential Election

On April 14, the fifth Leidschrift Symposium takes place. This year's topic will be the United States Presidential Election, and more specific the American Presidential Campaigns in a contemporary and historic perspective.
Entrance is free and there is no need to register. The introduction by Galen Irwin and the lecture by Kees Boonman will be in Dutch.

Study association: LUNAS

LUNAS is the study association for students in and alumni of North American Studies in Leiden. LUNAS helps new North American Studies students to find their way in and around the university and the city. In addition, LUNAS organises social, cultural and networking events for current students and alumni.


Reroll MOOC: The Rooseveltian Century!

In the week of March 21, you will be able to enrol into the new massive open online course on the three Roosevelts, Theodore, Franklin and Eleanor. Prof. Giles Scott Smith of the Leiden North American Studies department received a grant from the university to develop this MOOC and many Leiden Americanists have contributed to it.
