October 3rd is a local holiday in Leiden: the ‘Leids Ontzet’. For this reason, the university buildings are closed and there will be no lectures. This is also in effect for International Studies in The Hague.
On August 18th, 2016, Dr. Peter Gumbert (born January 23, 1936) passed away. Until his retirement in 2001, Gumbert was full professor of Latin Paleography and Codicology at Leiden University, a position he held from 1979. He was a prominent student of medieval manuscripts, whose reputation had spread far beyond the Netherlands.

The Dr. P.A. Tiele Foundation awards the thesis prize to the best graduate thesis in the field of book history. It is the objective of the Dr. P.A. Tiele Foundation to promote the study of the book in the Netherlands. This is done by installing professorships, enabling and publishing research and organizing symposia, congresses and lectures, and since 2007, by awarding remarkable theses.

With the start of the 2016-2017 academic year the Faculty of Humanities offers a new scholarship for students of various research MA programmes who wish to either study or conduct (field) research abroad.

On February 5th it’s Sweater Day. This means the University will lower the temperature in the lecture halls in the Lipsius and Huizinga building for one day to help reduce CO2-emissions. Don’t forget to bring a warm sweater to make sure you won’t be cold! In the week of February 8th, the University will announce the gains of this year’s Sweater Day.

In our newest production, 'Bram Stoker's Dracula', the funny, silly Dracula who has invaded popular culture with his plastic fangs, cackling laugh and black cape will make room for a more real, more mysterious Count. Gone are the days in which he was something to be laughed at: this play will frighten and repulse you!
