Deaf Africa symposium 27 August 2009

On 27 August, LUCL hosted the 'Deaf Africa Symposium'.

Information

In the Netherlands there are several initiatives and organizations which support Deaf people in Africa. The Deaf Africa Symposium wants to offer a platform for exchanging expertise, experiences and knowledge concerning sign language and Deafness/Deafhood in Africa. A number of initiatives in this field will present themselves in the morning of this one-day symposium. In the afternoon topics will be discussed that came up in the morning or that have been brought in earlier on. Examples of activities and topics we would like to address are Deaf empowerment, Deaf Education, employment, sign language teaching, material and research, short and long term objectives and best practices of development cooperation.

Exhibition

It is generally hard to lay hands or eyes on materials produced on deafness and/or sign languages in Africa. Therefore, the Deaf Africa Symposium includes an exhibition of such materials, including sign language dictionaries, teaching materials, sensitization materials, DVDs, brochures, etcetera. Participants of the workshop are encouraged to bring relevant materials, clearly marked with the name of the owner.
