Pre-conference workshop 'Attitudes to Prescriptivism'
'Attitudes to Prescriptivism' is the theme of a pre-conference workshop that will take place on Tuesday 11 June 2013. The workshop is organised by Robin Straaijer, Carmen Ebner, Morana Lukač and Viktorija Kostadinova of the Bridging the Unbridgeable-project.
The abstract booklet with the full programme can be downloaded here.
The workshop will feature papers that investigate language users’ attitudes towards prescriptivism and other normative actions, primarily from the point of view of the recipients of such actions, such as the general public, institutions and specific professional groups (linguists, journalists, educators, bloggers, etc.). The focus will mainly be on English, but proposals on other languages will also be welcome.
Drafts of the papers will circulate among the participants of the workshop beforehand. This way there is time for all participants to read them all and prepare constructive feedback for the benefit of the papers’ authors.
The format will be as follows: there will be 30-minute slots, each with 10 minutes for a short presentation of the paper, followed by 20 minutes for discussion and feedback.
The workshop is free for all conference delegates.
Interested scholars are invited to submit abstracts of no more than 500 words. We have laid out the following timeline:
31 March 2013 deadline for submitting an abstract
8 April 2013 notification of acceptance
31 May 2013 deadline for submitting draft paper
11 June 2013 workshop
Please submit abstracts to the following e-mail address: firstname.lastname@example.org with “abstract A2P” in the subject line.
