Research

My research focuses on cross-cultural pragmatics. Knowledge of the conversational conventions and politeness strategies of a language is essential to successfully participate in a conversation. What strategies and conventions are considered socially appropriate seem by no means universal. What might be the correct way to behave in one language and (language) culture, is not necessarily thought to be polite in another. In my research I will present a contrastive analysis of the conversational conventions and politeness strategies used in Dutch on the one hand and Indonesian on the other. Such an analysis will give a good impression of what parts of conversation and politeness are (more or less) universal (if at all), and what parts are most likely to be influenced by cultural specifics.
