The PhD Council is the body elected from the LUCAS PhD student community to represent the general interests of all of the institute’s PhD candidates.
The PhD Council is the body elected from the LUCAS PhD student community in order to represent the general interests of all of the institute’s PhD candidates. The Council keeps itself informed of the PhD candidates’ concerns and any relevant matters within the institute, Leiden University and the academic world in general. The PhD Council advises the LUCAS director, on its own initiative as well as at the institute’s request, about matters concerning the training and supervision of its PhD candidates.
The Council’s second objective is to increase and maintain the social cohesion and collaboration within the institute’s PhD student community. To this end, the Council organises a number of activities that promote the exchange of knowledge, skills, experiences and ideas among LUCAS PhD candidates, such as the popular PhD Lunch.
The Council has a term of office of two years. A month before this term expires, all LUCAS PhD candidates are notified by email and invited to stand for election for the next term.
The elected members of the PhD Council are appointed by the Director of LUCAS and then choose a chair and secretary from their midst. The chair of the PhD Council is also a member of the LUCAS Advisory Board.
The current Council (installed in October 2015) consists of six PhD candidates:
Looi van Kessel (chair till October 2016)
Tessa de Zeeuw (secretary and chair starting October 2016)
The PhD Council meets at least six times per academic year, in advance of the meetings of the LUCAS Advisory Board. In addition, the PhD Council holds at least two plenary meetings every year, which all LUCAS PhD candidates are invited to attend.
A free PhD lunch is organised once every semester month to allow all LUCAS PhD candidates to meet one another in an informal setting. The language of the lunch is English and foreign LUCAS PhD candidates are particularly welcome to join.
The PhD Lunch usually takes place on the second Tuesday of the month, at the Van Eyckhof canteen.
If you have any questions, requests or if you would like to bring a specific issue to the Council's attention, please contact its members via email@example.com
