Fields of interest

  • Eco-critical art and theory
  • Representation of contaminated landscapes in (the photographic) image and sound, especially post-nuclear landscapes
  • Role of art in environmental discourse

My research deals with the representation of post-nuclear landscapes, such as the Chernobyl exclusion zone or the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, in contemporary art. In particular, I investigate how nuclear fallout, which is conventionally marked as an environmental pollutant, becomes associated with notions of purity, nature and wilderness in the revaluation of those sites as quasi-nature reserves.
