My field of interest touches upon disciplines such as anthropology, ethnography and art history. Yet a contextual overarching view appears necessary, reason for a research that encompasses other disciplines such as political history, post-colonial theory and post-modernism.
I am interested in how Western academicism, with its all-encompassing systematisation, is under threat because contemporary art practices from several regions of the world, which are rooted in traditional arts, question taxonomies inherited from the colonial period, and which remain being utilised.
I also have a deep interest in traditional textiles and crafts from all the world.
This research investigates how and why contemporary artists from Southeast Asia frequently employ elements from traditional arts, crafts and narratives in their practice.
