Title: Tradition and Renewal in French Literature from the Romantic Period. Description: The project covers on the one hand 19th century French literature, and, on the other, two sub-projects relating to 20th century French-language Literature: 1900-1945 andpost- 1945.
Pertaining to the 19th century the following may be distinguished:

  1. Romanticism and realism (Houppermans, Van Maris)
  2. Poetry and the novel 1850-1900 (Kingma, Houppermans, Van Maris)
Before the 1900-1945 period
  1. Modernism and ‘Avant-Garde’ (Houppermans, Schulte Nordholt)
  2. Genres and genre development (Houppermans, Kingma, Smith)
For the period after 1945, the project consists of four parts which treat drama, poetry, the novel and Francophonia respectively, divided into the following sub-projects:
  1. Rhetoric techniques in post-war drama (Went-Daoust, Houppermans, De Ruyter-Tognotti)
  2. La suggestion poëtique dans la poësie d'après la Deuxième Guerre Mondiale (Kingma-Eijgendaal, Smith)
  3. The French novel after 1945, from neo-classic to post-modern (Houppermans, Went-Daoust, Schulte Nordholt)
  4. Francophone Literature and cultural identity (Van Strien-Chardonneau, De Ruyter-Tognotti, Houppermans)
In these different sub-projects, an attempt is made to arrive on the one hand at a theoretical framework to be able to apply concepts such as ‘tradition’ and ‘innovation’ to literary works, and on the other hand to be able to studies on significant authors and works.
