In my PhD project 'Narrative reflective self-understanding: the corporeal' I analyze the politics and aesthetics of representations of corporeal violence, as staged in contemporary American and European cinema with the ‘war on terror’ as a theme. My aim is to unravel normative strategies and ideologies surrounding the portrayal of violence, the body, subjectivity, and agency; to probe the narratives’ multi-faceted strategies of resistance against these very ideologies and sensibilities; and to explore how the images affect and co-constitute the spectator’s subjectivity and self-understanding. My research is part of the NWO-funded interdisciplinary programme What can the humanities contribute to our practical self-understanding? that takes place at Utrecht University, Erasmus University Rotterdam and Leiden University.
I hold a Bachelor's degree in Literary Studies and completed the Research Master Cultural Analysis at the University of Amsterdam in 2010.
I also run the monthly film club Kino Praxis at the OT301, together with Adam Chambers and Thijs Witty (affiliated to the University of Amsterdam, ASCA).
