International Grants and Fellowships (Europe)

LUCAS offers its members a range of important grants, subsidies and fellowships for PhD students, post docs and senior scholars.

In order to achieve its research agenda and meet its research goals, LUCAS cannot do without funding provided by agencies in the field of humanities.

The institute therefore encourages its members to regularly submit research proposals to these organisations. There are many funding agencies for the humanities, but two stand out: NWO and the European Union (ERC and Marie Curie). If you are interested in writing a research proposal, please contact the institute manager, for guidance and assistance.

Please note that research proposals must be sent to the institute manager first, at least 14 days before submitting it. The LUCAS management team needs to agree with the proposal before it is submitted.

Horizon 2020

Horizon 2020 is the biggest EU research and innovation programme ever, with nearly € 80 billion of funding available over seven years (2014 to 2020). Horizon 2020 started on 1 January 2014 and is the successor of the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7).

Its simplified rules and submission and grant management tools should facilitate participants' tasks. You can search for funding on the participants portal. For practical guidance, see the H2020 online manual.

The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) is the national research council in the Netherlands and has a budget of 650 million euros per year. NWO promotes quality and innovation in science.

An overview of the many granting opportunities offered by NWO is available on their website.

The main goal of the European Research Council (ERC) is to encourage high quality research in Europe through competitive funding.
There are three ERC core funding schemes. More information can be found on the ERC website.

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions

The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions are aimed at any research field in the humanities or sciences.

Anyone who has a doctoral degree or over four years of full-time equivalent research experience can apply for a grant. There is no age limit.

Useful contacts

Writing research proposals for funding agencies requires considerable investments in time and effort. It is common practice to involve colleagues in the planning and designation of a research project from the start. Please contact the institute manager if you are planning to write a research proposal.
