Greeks in Egypt: Their Final Departure 1952-1970
Supervisors: Tsolin Nalbantian, Petra Sijpesteijn

In this project, I examine the economic, political, religious and social factors of the departure of the Greek community from Egypt during the period 1952-1970. This period marks the final stage of the departure of the Greek community of Egypt, as the community was never again able to regain or reform its economic, social, and political prowess in Egypt. My aim is to investigate how the main power entities, including the Egyptian and Greek states, the Greek Orthodox Church in Egypt and Greece, and the Greek inhabitants in Egypt, played a role in this departure, according to the aforementioned factors. How did these powers interact with each other and engage with the on-going mass departure of the Greek community? Through the use of material in Greek and Arabic from archives and media resources as well as conducting interviews, the project will offer a unique multisided and integrated insight into this crucial period in the history of the Greek community in Egypt.
