PhD research

A Typological Approach to Sumerian
Supervisors: Wilfred van Soldt (LIAS), Theo Krispijn (LIAS) and Marcos Such-Guttièrez (UAM)

The aim of the research project will be to define the word order of Sumerian language. The linguistic methodology used will be typological. This approach will not only allow to analyse more in-depth the syntactical structure of Sumerian, but also, if possible, specify it's type as a language.

First, the analysis will consist of checking the diachronical variations of Sumerian by using texts from different periods. Second, comparing Sumerian to other agglutinative languages, the internal structures of which are sufficiently comparable to it, but also to Akkadian, because of the close bilingualism that existed between both language, will result in a new method of study of the Sumerian language.
