VICI project
Responses to Islamic Radicalism and Terrorism in Contemporary Indonesia
Supervisors: Cees van Dijk and Nico Kaptein

My PhD research project aims to study contemporary various responses to Islamic radicalism and terrorism in the post-New Order Indonesia. It seeks to focus mainly on the responses of the government and Muslim community, in particular Islamic religious leaders (‘ulama’) and intellectuals of the mainstream Islam during the reform era, dating from 1998 onwards. Against the background of history and current development of Islamic radicalism and terrorism within the Indonesian political context, this study attempts to explore approaches, strategies, means and methods used to socially and politically counter the threats. Many had been and are still being formulated and undertaken with regard to policies, practices and alternatives as to respond to Islamic radicalism and terrorism. Analyzing the relations between the efforts of the government and Muslim community, this project seeks to explore a variety of responses opted, such as security and legal responses as an operational approach; and ideological, educational, and cultural responses as a strategic approach.
