Syriac and the Syriac churches in North Iraq: the language of our Lord
Supervisors: prof.dr. H.L. Murre-van den Berg (LUCSoR), prof.dr. J.E.C.V. Rooryck (Leiden University Centre for Linguistics)
Tijmen Baarda started in October 2012 a PhD programme within the NWO project “Arabic and Its Alternatives” led by Professor Heleen Murre-van den Berg, which is a cooperation between the Leiden Institute for Religious Studies and the Leiden University Centre for Linguistics. The topic of his research is the choices the Syriac Christians of North Iraq made in terms of language in the years 1920–1950, which is the period in which the new Iraqi state emerged, and how these choices represent the ways these Syriac communities redefined their positions in the new state.
The research is mainly conducted by the reading of different types of textual sources from the four communities corresponding to the four Syriac denominations present in North Iraq: the Syriac Orthodox, the Syriac Catholics, the Assyrian Church of the East, and the Chaldeans.
