Teaching
My teaching is mainly concerned with influential aspects of the philosophy of Antiquity and the Middle Ages. I am interested in the reception of Plato, Aristotle, and the Stoics in late Antiquity (200-600 AD) and esp. in Neoplatonism. Philosophers in late Antiquity discuss critical questions and problems which foreshadow the reception of ancient philosophy in the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Early Modern period. Sometimes they have even managed to dominate modern interpretations of Plato and Aristotle.
Research
My research focuses on the reception of Aristotle's philosophy of science, and on "philosophy of mind" in Antiquity and the Middle Ages. More specifically I am interested in the interpretation of Aristotle's Posterior Analytics, On the soul, and On sense and sensibles from late Antiquity onwards. Moreover, in this respect there is an interesting interplay between philosophy and exact sciences like mathematics and astronomy in Antiquity. My most important sources are philosophical commentaries by Alexander of Aphrodisias, Themistius, Philoponus, Simplicius, Eustratius, and Grosseteste, as well as the treatises by Plotinus and Proclus. I also study philosophical commentaries from the Renaissance, which were inspired directly by the late ancient commentaries which became available in new editions in the 15th century.
International cooperation
- Leiden, Utrecht and Leuven cooperate in the Centre for Ancient Philosophy (CAW in Dutch), which facilitates part of the training of MA and PhD students, and organizes regular meetings, lectures by foreign speakers etc.
- Team leader in the European programme From natural philosophy to science (2002-2007) funded by the European Science Foundation.
- Editor of the English translation of Greek commentaries on the Posterior Analytics as part of the project Ancient Commentators on Aristotle.
- Member and former chairman of the Academia Platonica septima Monasteriensis, a European network for research in Platonism, established in Münster (Germany).
