Research
Overseas territories in the Orient: comparing urban developments in Portuguese and Dutch colonial cities, 1498 - 1798.
The research aims to extend the current knowledge on the Asian overseas territories in the field of Urban History using a comparative framework to analyse the urban development processes of selected Portuguese and Dutch settlements. It is generally acknowledged that the colonial settling strategies followed by the European powers in the context of their overseas expansions in the Orient led to a succession of site developments circumscribed to the same territory, which in time gave rise to a network of colonial cities / towns shaped by multiple cultural influences.
The specific aim of the investigation is to further extend the Urban History's current knowledge on these cities by an historical inquiry of the Portuguese and Dutch cultural influences in its layout and city-building processes between the sixteenth and the eighteenth centuries.
