My research focuses on slave refugees in the North and Canada, 1800-1860. It examines the motivations behind slave flight to the North and Canada, the networks that facilitated escape, the settlement processes of slave refugees in their new environment, and the impact of slave flight on local, national, and international discussions of slavery. By applying a social-historical approach, it hopes to provide a continental perspective on refugee migration.
