Curriculum vitae

Dr. Manon van der Heijden is a social historian, working in the field of early modern urban history. In 1998 she received her Ph.D. at Erasmus University Rotterdam in 1998, where she worked from 1992-1998. From 1999-2006 she was appointed at the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam. Since September 2006 she works at Leiden University. In 2005 she was granted a NWO VIDI project Civil Services and Urban Communities, 1500-1800. In 2012 she was granted a NWO VICI project Crime and Gender 1600-1900.

Fields of interest

She is interested in the history of  criminal justice, the family, urban finances, citizenship, civil society and public services. She was editor of the Dutch-Flemish The Low Countris Journal of Social and Economic History, (www.tseg.nl), the journal Stadsgeschiedenis and she is member of the Advisory Board of Crime, History & Societies. She is editor of the Flemish-Dutch Journal Stadsgeschiedenis. She was research director of Social History of Communities of the N.W. Posthumus Institute (www.rug.nl/posthumus).
