Katja Heede has a legal background. She is programme coordinator and lecturer for EU-Studies and combines this with a law practice. Katja Heede graduated from Leiden University in 1993. During her study years she lived several years in France enabling her to join the Maîtrise en Droit Public at the University of Toulouse. The degree in European Law obtained in Leiden was soon followed by a degree in Dutch Law obtained at the University of Amsterdam. The years in Leiden served as the basis for her PhD-studies at the European Law department of the University of Rotterdam. Katja Heede defended her PhD European Ombudsman: redress and control on EU level in Rotterdam in 2000. Part of the research was done in Strasbourg, where Katja was employed by the European Ombudsman Office and work as an intern for the European Parliament. In order to understand the impact of the EU legal order on the national legal order, Katja subsequently joined the Dutch public law department of the University of Amsterdam before seeking new frontiers in the capital town of Madrid (Spain). There she joined the staff of the university Alfonso X el Sabio and learned Spanish. By 2002 she took a two years sabbatical before returning to Holland in order to practice as a lawyer. She joined the staff of EU-Studies in September 2009.
