Curriculum Vitae

Professor Griffiths (b. 1948) graduated summa cum laude in Economic History and Russian Studies at the University College of Swansea (1970) and obtained his PhD in history from the University of Cambridge (1977) for his thesis entitled Industrial Retardation in the Netherlands, 1830-1850. He was a university lecturer in European Studies at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (1973-1979) before being appointed to the chair of Economic and Social History at the Free University Amsterdam(1980-1987). He was a founder member of the Posthumus Institute, the Dutch Post-Graduate Centre for Social and Economic History (1987). He was then appointed to the chair of Contemporary History at the European University Institute, Florence, where he also acted as director of the Institute's permanent research project into the history of European integration (1987-1995). In 1995 he returned to the Netherlands at his present post as professor of Economic and Social History at the University of Leiden. He coordinates the Art Faculty's PraktijkStudies program and, within that framework, its European Union Studies courses. He also lectures regularly on MA courses at Bilgi University (Istanbul) and Chulalongkorn University (Bangkok).

He has been visiting professor at Catholic University of Leuven (1987), the University of Aalborg (1996) and Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok (1997, 1998) and scholar in Residence at the Roosevelt Study Centre, Middelburg (1991).
