Carolien Boender is working on a PhD thesis on the persistence of civic identities in the Netherlands between 1747 and 1848, with Haarlem as the main case study. She will investigate to what extent, during the decades in which the national government became increasingly important, townspeople continued to rely on local civic traditions, for instance in conflict resolution and performance of civic memory culture.

Curriculum vitae

Carolien obtained her MA degree in History from Leiden University (2014), with a thesis on the presence of local identity in the Coster commemorations in Haarlem (1823 and 1856). She assisted the editiorial board of the edited volume Een nieuwe staat. Het begin van het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden (Amsterdam 2013), part of the 200 jaar koninkrijk project.
