Admission
PhD candidates are subject to admission to the Graduate School for Humanities. This involves a specific procedure which is described on the website of the Graduate School for Humanities.
It is important to note that admission mainly depends on candidates having successfully completed a MA degree in history (or equivalent discipline), and on their having found a supervisor at the Institute for History. All prospective supervisors at the Institute are listed under the five research themes.
See the section Description of the programme.
In case PhD candidates are funded by the Institute for History they will be selected by the Institute’s PhD committee. This committee consists of the following members:
Dr. J.J.L. Gommans
Prof. P.C.M. Hoppenbrouwers
Prof. L. de Ligt
Prof. L.A.C.J. Lucassen
Prof. M.E.H.N. Mout
Prof. H. Te Velde
Dr. P.J.J. Meel (director of research)
C.M. Stolte MPhil (chairperson of the PhD Council)
In case PhD candidates are sponsored by an external funding agency and accountability for the funding is a responsibility of the Institute for History they will be selected by an ad hoc committee. In all instances the relevant supervisor and the director of research Dr. P.J.J. Meel will be part of this committee.
Self-funded PhD candidates working in the Institute for History are required to pay a fee covering the costs of research facilities and supervision costs. As a rule this category of PhD candidates does not contribute to the teaching tasks of the Institute for History.
