Leiden University performs well in QS World University Rankings. In 2010 it was ranked 82nd in the world and 15th in continental Europe. The Humanities Faculty fared better still, ranked 38th in the World and 8th in Continental Europe. The results show that academics rank Area Studies, English and History at Leiden University as the best in continental Europe. Linguistics came in at third and Modern Languages 12th.

• Area Studies in the QS composite index is ranked 47th in the World. Academics ranked it 34th in the World and Number One in Continental Europe;

• English in the QS composite index is ranked 50-100 in the World. Academics ranked it 47th in the World and Number One in Continental Europe;

• History in the QS composite index is ranked 34th in the World. Academics ranked it 25th in the World and Number One in Continental  Europe;

• Modern Languages in the QS composite index is ranked 50-100 in the World. Academics ranked it 25th in the World and 12th in Continental Europe;

• Linguistics in the QS composite index is ranked 41st in the World. Academics ranked it 34th in the World and 3rd in Continental  Europe
