Prospective PhD Candidates

Thank you for your interest in doing PhD research at the Leiden Graduate School of Humanities. There are many reasons to choose Leiden as the place for your research.

The institutes in the Graduate School of Humanities offer several distinct PhD programmes. Once you have decided on your field of research, you can start looking for a supervisor.
Finding the right supervisor is a key element in the process of obtaining a doctorate. The supervisor has to confirm that he or she is willing to accept you as a candidate (promovendus) before any further steps can be taken.

You will need to meet certain requirements before you can admitted to the PhD programme.
Once you meet these requirements and you know who your supervisor is going to be, you can move on to the next step in the admission procedure.

There are basically two types of PhD candidates. You can apply for different types of affiliation, summed up as University-funded or self-funded. Apart from this, there are several other financial matters that may need your attention.

If you are not from the Netherlands, you may need a visa, residence permit and/or work permit.
