November 5 2015: The Translation of Same-Sex Desire in Natsume Soseki's Kokoro
On November 5, 2015, Steve Dodd of the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London will deliver a lecture on aspects of same-sex desire in Natsume Soseki's novel, Kokoro, through the lens of translation studies theory.
Drawing on the writings of Walter Benjamin and Paul Ricoeur, Steve Dodd argue that the relationship between Sensei and the student can be likened to a process of translation (of mutual feeling, thought, desire). Furthermore, he suggests that certain ultimately untranslatable aspects of their relationship open up a new way of defining the very process of translation.
