Zeno Lecture: Leibniz and Spinoza on Epistemological Optimism

The next Zeno Lecture will be held in Leiden
Thursday, April 9, 4-6 pm in room 148 of the Lipsius Building.

The speaker will be Christia Mercer (Columbia University), who will speak on ‘Leibniz and Spinoza on Epistemological Optimism’.
All are welcome.
 
Christia Mercer is the Gustave M. Berne Professor in the Philosophy Department at Columbia. She gave the Ernst Cassirer Lectures at the University of Hamburg in 2005, was visiting professor at Oslo, Norway, Spring (1998), Centre Alexandre Koyré, École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (2003, 2005, 2007), and the Seminar für Geistesgeschichte und Philosophie der Renaissance, University of Munich, Germany (2003).

Her research focuses on early modern philosophy, especially on sixteenth and seventeenth century Platonism and humanism, history of science, metaphysics, and philosophical method. Apart from numerous journal articles, she has authored Leibniz's Metaphysics: Its Origin and Development Cambridge, 2001, 2006), co-edited Early Modern Philosophy: Mind, Matter, and Mechanism (Oxford, 2005) and contributed to various collected volumes (Cambridge Ciompanion to Leibniz, Blackwell Guide to Early Modern Philosophy, The Rise of Modern Philosophy, The Rationalists i.a.).

Christia Mercer is currently working on an introduction to Leibniz for the Great Minds series; a reevaluation of pre-Enlightenment German philosophy, ‘Divine Madness': Metaphysics, Method, and Mind in Early Modern German Philosophy; and a critical study of the notion of matter in 17th C. science,Material Difficulties: Matter, Explanation, and Mind in Early Modern Philosophy. She is also North American editor of Archiv für Geschichte der Philosophie and general editor of Oxford Philosophical Concepts: A Philosophical and Historical Analysis of Major Concepts in the History of Philosophy.
